John: Hi Miyako.
Miyako: Oh, hello John. How are things? Are we still going to go to the Mexican place on Saturday night?
John: Well, I’m still going to go but Hiroko just called and she said she has a big psychology test on Monday and she isn’t going to be able to come to the restaurant because she is going to have to study all weekend.
Miyako: That’s a shame. I thought she was really nice. I was looking forward to seeing her again.
John: Yeah, it’s a pity. But there’s no way out of it.
Miyako: How do you say shikata ga nai in English?
John: I don’t know.
Miyako: John, you really have to work on your Japanese! My English is getting better and better and Yumie’s English is getting better and better and Hiroko’s English is getting better and better and your Japanese is not getting anywhere!
John: I know! I know! I have to do something about it!
