I used to write with a pencil.


I wrote with a pencil before, but I don’t do that now.

“Used to” PLUS verb

We use the pattern “used to” plus verb to describe an action which has been done many times but now it is not.

Before the advent of modern digital technology, I used to write with a pencil but now I use a laptop to write.

Four Meanings of “Use”

There are four meanings of “use”:

I used to be a werewolf, but I am alright now.

I use an apple I-phone.

It was hard to speak English at first but I got used to it.

I am used to speaking English all the time because I have lived in English-speaking countries for many years.

Things that I used to Do

I used to live with my parents but now I live alone.

I used to have long hair but now it is short.

I used to be a student but now I work full-time and I don’t have time to study.
