An Explanatory Note – “were raised”

They were raised in different homes. (passive voice)

Their foster parents raised them in different homes.(active voice)

They were brought up in different homes. (passive voice)

Their foster parents brought them up in different homes. (active voice)

Common Mistakes:

They were grown up …

You can say: “They grew up in different homes. ”

You cannot say: “They were grown up in different homes.”

Look for this sentence in the text as you read:

One of the boys was raised by an extremely wealthy family.

(It means: “A wealthy family raised one boy”.)
