4. The Change (present continuous tense)

Daithi: It is early in the morning in a Japanese guy’s apartment.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: He is asleep in his bed.
Mark: Ok.
Daithi: He is dreaming about global warming.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: The ice at the north pole is melting.
Mark: Right.
Daithi: The ice at the south pole is melting.
Mark: Oh no!
Daithi: The sea level is rising.
Mark: Oh my god!
Daithi: Is the sea level really rising?
Mark: Yes, it is. It really is rising. I am really worried. I saw that Al Gore movie, “An Inconvenient Truth” and the sea level is rising and the poles are melting. It is really scary. The earth is changing really quickly.
Daithi: There are typhoons and tornadoes.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Are there tornadoes in Japan?
Mark: There are typhoons in Japan. I think… what is the difference between a tornado and a typhoon? Do you know?
Daithi: I am not sure I think maybe a tornado is on land and a typhoon is possibly something to do more with being at sea.
Mark: I think you are right. Yeah.
Mark: Anyway in Japan they have tornadoes; they have typhoons! so there are no…I don’t think there are tornadoes in Japan.
Daithi: The earth is changing.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Is it getting cooler?
Mark: No, it is not. It is.. well.. actually maybe it is getting cooler in some places some places. I think the temperature is a lot more variable. Some places are getting cooler and some places are getting warmer.
Daithi: Many people are dying.
Mark: Oh dear!
Daithi: Suddenly the guy wakes up.
Mark: uh-huh
Daithi: He looks out the window.
Mark: M-hm.
Daithi: The sun is shining.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Is it raining?
Mark: No it is not. The sun is shining. Of course, it is not raining. Sometimes the sun shines while it is raining but not very often.
Daithi: It is a beautiful day but it is very very hot.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: The guy gets ready for university then he leaves his house.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: He walks to the station.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: How long does it take?
Mark: It takes ten minutes.
Daithi: At the station he sees a friend.
Mark: U-hm.
Daithi: What is the friend doing?
Mark: The friend is sitting on a bench reading a newspaper and he is waiting for the train.
Daithi: What is he wearing?
Mark: He is wearing a pair of long dark pants and a pair of dark shoes and a blue shirt and he has a briefcase with him.
Daithi: Do they talk?
Mark: They say “hello” but they don’t talk.
Daithi: On the train the guy sees the beautiful woman.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: She is wearing a colorful shirt.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Is she wearing jeans?
Mark: No, she is not.
Daithi: What kind of shoes is she wearing?
Mark: She is wearing sports shoes.
Daithi: Is she wearing a headscarf?
Mark: Yes, she is.
Daithi: Is she wearing make-up?
Mark: No, she is not.
Daithi: Is she wearing any ear-rings?
Mark: Yes, she is. She is wearing a pair of simple gold ear-rings.
Daithi: She is wearing a necklace.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: What is on it?
Mark: A “peace sign” is on it…There is a peace sign on it.
Daithi: The guy talks to the woman.
Mark: M-hm.
Daithi: He asks her for a date but she does not want to go on a date with him.
Mark: Ok.
Daithi: She does not like him.
Mark: Right.
Daithi: She thinks he is boring.
Mark: Oh no!
Daithi: She is interested in environmental problems and political problems but he is only interested in shopping and money.
Mark: I see.
Daithi: She thinks he is superficial.
Mark: I think he is a bit superficial too.
Daithi: At school that day the guy has three classes.
Mark: Uh huh.
Daithi: One class is chemistry.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Another class is design.
Mark: Right.
Daithi: During the class he looks around.
Mark: Ok.
Daithi: A lot of the students are sleeping.
Mark: Oh really. Wow! Ok.
Daithi: What percentage of them are sleeping?
Mark: Actually I used to teach in a high school in Japan and I walked around and I reckon about thirty per cent of every class; the students were sleeping. They were openly sleeping on the desk. When I went to school we were not allowed to sleep. We had to pay attention or pretend to pay attention. So. Anyway.Yeah. Ok. (voice modulation changes) So. Thirty per cent of them are sleeping.
Daithi: The third class is an English class.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: During that class a lot of the students speak Japanese.
Mark: M-hm.
Daithi: During the class the guy thinks about the beautiful woman.
Mark: Uh uh I can imagine that.
Daithi: At one point he looks around.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Some of the students are sleeping and some of them are speaking Japanese.
Mark: Uh huh.
Daithi: They are wasting their time.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Only a few of them are speaking English.
Mark: Right.
Daithi: Only a few of them are using their time wisely.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: How many people are there in the class?
Mark: There are forty-five.
Daithi: How many of them are sleeping?
Mark: Fifteen of them are sleeping.
Daithi: How many of them are speaking Japanese?
Mark: They are all speaking Japanese except two.
Daithi: After class the guy talks to another student.
Mark: M-hm.
Daithi: The student speaks really good English.
Mark: Yes.
Daithi: He always asks questions in class.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: He is different from the others.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: He is not like everybody else.
Mark: Uh-huh.
Daithi: Are you different from other people?
Mark: Yes, I am in some ways. In some ways I am different from other people but in other ways I am the same. I think everybody is like that.
