Academic Vocabulary in Context – Answers – Pay

1. Globalisation and the Labour Market

1. Low-paid menial workers from overseas will be shipped into the country to meet the demand for cheap labour. It will be a win-win situation.

The verb is future passive, and it needs a noun phrase. “Low-paid menial workers” is a noun phrase. It means workers who do unskilled physical work and receive a low wage.

2. An Inquiry about Wages and Salary

2. How much do they pay? Do you know how much they pay?

The answer phrase is a relative clause. “How much” acts as a relative pronoun and allows us to join the two phrases. We also call a question like this an embedded question. Look at more examples of embedded questions:

How does it cost to get to Tokyo?
Can you tell me how much it costs to get to Tokyo?

How much money does he have?
Do you know how much money he has?

3. Security Measures for Accounts Payable Staff

3. A variety of security measures are in place to prevent accounts payable personnel from embezzling funds. They are the ones who handle all the money so they have the opportunity to steal.

Accounts payable staff” is a noun phrase. It refers to “people who are employed in the Accounts Payable Section” of a company. These people handle money so they have to be very trustworthy.

4. A Question about Regularity of Salary Payment

4. Are you always paid on time or do you sometimes get paid late?

There are two variations of passive voice, one with “be” verb and one with “get”.

Does your boss always pay on time?

How are you paid?

5. Award Wages

5. Does your employer pay award rates or are you underpaid according to the national recommended wage plan?

In some countries trade unions (labour unions) set the wages, or a government body sets wages. What is the situation in your country? Is there a minimum wage? Should there be a maximum wage for the CEO of a company?

6. International Banking Transfers

6. I would like to make monthly online payments to an account in Thailand. Is it possible to set it up so that the money goes through automatically each month?

“Monthly online payments” is a noun phrase.

Internet banking allows transfer of funds to an overseas account. Have you ever sent money overseas? Do you make regular payments?

7. Worker’s Rights and the Value of Labour

7. A lot of workers in Australia are viewed as overpaid according to the managers of the corporations and the businesses who employ them, whereas the trade union movement takes the view that workers are worth more than their market value and there is a human dimension to the question of the value of labour, which transcends the necessity of allowing, as far as possible, the market system to function. Workers are human beings, and this must go to the foundation of our discussion.

The verb phrase in the answer is in passive voice. It is important to master verb phrases including passive voice and noun phrases. This will help decide which phrase to insert in the gap.

8. Documentary Journalism Techniques

8. The journalists were not supposed to be filming in the port facility but the security guard was paid off and so, having been let in, and by means of a hidden camera, they were able to get a lot of useful footage which showed the realities of the disposal of electronic waste from Europe.

“Was paid off” is a passive voice verb phrase. It can mean “to take a bribe” or to “be on the payroll”, or “to be on the take”.

Is bribery common in your society?

9. Earning a Decent Income

9. Working as an accountant is boring sometimes but it pays the bills and we all have to find a way to get by so I am pleased that it is reasonably well-paid.

“It pays the bills” is a very strong collocation (a very common phrase). It is almost like a Chinese proverb and people use it a lot to describe their attitude when they talk about their work.

Look at this common exchange:

– How is your new job?
– It pays the bills.

10. A Senate Hearing

10. A Senate hearing has been told that hundreds of thousands of people will be required to pay more to see a doctor if new Government medical fee increases are introduced.

Some times the Senate (part of the government) conducts an inquiry (conducts a hearing) to get information about an important topic. In this case the government wants to know the effect of government medical fee increases.

Is there a national public health system in your country?

The answer phrase is a passive verb phrase plus an infinitive.

11. Business Law

11. In law, the payer is the party making a payment while the payee is the party receiving the payment.

There are two noun phrases. This is useful vocabulary for economics and business.
