The secret of listening

is

You do not have to understand everything

Just Listen!

That means you do not need to understand every word.

Just listen!
You just have to listen!
You only have to listen!

That is the secret of listening.

Two Things that you will Notice

While you are listening you will notice something.
In fact, you will notice two things.
The two things which you will notice are:

There are things that you understand

and

There are things that you do not understand

Pairs of Phrases

Look at these pairs:

Things that you understand

Things that you don’t understand

Things that you will understand

Things that you will not understand

There are things that you will understand.

There are things that you will not understand.

The Technique

Focus on the things that you understand.
Do not focus on the things that you do not understand.

Focus

That is all.
It is simple.
It is so simple.

Don’t Give Up

Many people focus on the things that they cannot understand.
They lose heart.
They lose confidence.
They give up.

Focus on what you Understand

This is ineffective.
It is more effective to focus on what you do understand and try to work on that.

Listening to a Text

When you listen to a text, you will always find that there are words that you don’t understand. Even native speakers do not know some words in some texts and people often miss words because they did not catch what was said.

It does not matter. It is not important.

The important thing is to focus on what you do understand!

Some Advice

You should focus on what you do understand!

Each listening text contains small words and phrases like

on the bus
in my room
last night
every day
with my friend
at my house
to most people
from time to time

Focus on words and phrases that you recognise. Ignore the words and phrases that you do not recognise.

As you listen you will understand more and more. You will recognise more and more words and phrases. Words that you did not understand will become clear. You will hear words again and again. Sometimes you will hear words again and again but you will not know what they mean. In that situation you can work out the meaning of the word from the context. Or you can use a bilingual dictionary to help you.
