When we press the buttons on a smartphone they are not always letters. They are not words either.

In fact they are neither letters nor words.

Icons have begun to replace words.

Using icons instead of words to express feelings is a simplification.

It is a shift in focus.

It is a shift in the mode of attention.
It is a shift from verbal to visual.

The person who selects an icon does not search in himself or herself for the words she seeks. She or he clicks a visual icon.

This has changed our vocabulary.
